SMS Surface Energy Analyzer (SEA)

SMS SEA

The Surface Measurement Systems' Surface Energy Analyzer ( SEA ) is the latest development in chromatographic sorption technology. Based on Inverse Gas Chromatography ( IGC ) methodology, the innovative, second-generation SEA is capable of characterizing a wide range of surface and bulk properties of solids, particulates, fibers, and thin films.

Key properties measured by the SEA include surface energy acid-base parameters, energetic heterogeneity mapping, batch-to-batch variations in surface chemistry, glass transition temperatures, adhesion – cohesion thermodynamics, and solubility parameters and crosslink density.

The SEA provides unique access to the following physico-chemical properties of a wide range of solid materials in a controlled humidity environment:

  • Dispersive and polar surface energies
  • Heats and entropies of adsorption
  • Acid/base interactions
  • Phase transitions
  • Sorption isotherms
  • Permeability, solubility and diffusion
  • Micropore and mesopore distributions
  • Competitive (multicomponent) adsorption
  • Surface energy heterogeneity mapping

The SEA is fully-automated with a small footprint and features 12 solvent reservoirs, a column temperature range of 15 oC to 150 oC with an optional high temperature column oven capable of temperatures up to 500 oC, variable injection sizes of 1:4000 ratio, an optional thin film accessory, and optional humidity control.
